Weekend Things & GABF 2018

What can I say about this weekend except that it was the very best because: after two years, we were back at Great American Beer Fest!  Saturday was low key and plan-free and Sunday involved a last-minute manicure and baking (because it’s fall now, ya know??).  I’d relive it all again in a heartbeat!

In truest Lauren form, I was EXTREMELY prepared for GABF — you do not even know how thorough my list making was — and my excitement level was OFF THE CHARTS.  Pretzel necklaces and Illegal Pete’s burritos are my favorite pre-fest rituals but this year was even better because Hannah and Mason dropped Josh off and I got to see that little babe crawl and bounce on our rubber cow and make only the best of faces ♥

The line to get into the fest was HORRIBLE (I think it wound the entire way around the convention center), but once inside, I forgot all about that ordeal.  Highlights included being the last group to taste Zombie Dust from 3 Floyds, a DEEP purple barrel-aged sour from Une Année, the Blazed Orange Milkshake from Hop Butcher for the World, a guy playing the saxophone on top the Melvin bus (who knows!) and get this… A SPAGHETTI GOSE from WeldWerks!  It smelled like spaghetti and tasted tomato-y in the most interesting way.  You’re probably thinking “EW!” but let me ask you this, do you like a Bloody Mary??  It’s not so different.  Mostly though, this was just the best night with the best people and I feel so happy about it.

Joey got up the next morning and ran 5 miles (HOW??) but I needed an iced oat milk latte to revive me.  It worked, thankfully!  I realized I’d put ALL my energy into preparing for GABF and forgot to plan anything for Saturday or Sunday, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise because it made for a real laid back couple of days.  I hit up the grocery, bottled some orange-vanilla-honey kombucha, napped, excitedly snapped a picture of my little library once Joey got it set up (♥♥♥) and then we made tacos and watched Set It Up (which isn’t going to win any Oscars but we laughed).

Oh and I finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, bringing my HP re-read to a close and it is so so bittersweet.  I think I cried like 100x during that last book, starting on the literal first page which said something like “And now we bring you the final installment of the Harry Potter series.”  HA!

Sunday started with a run for both of us (TEN MILES for Joey and five for me) then breakfast together before we split up for the afternoon.  I booked myself a manicure and walked over to a surprisingly quiet Base Coat and on my way back, I peeped that little library and it made me so happy.  I tackled lunches before sitting outside to read for a bit.

Once Joey got home from watching football (really needed him to get our mixer down for me :P), I got to baking because it’s fall now and we MUST.  This recipe for Whole Wheat Applesauce Loaf is one of my very favorites and I hadn’t made it in years so obviously that had no change.  I always make em into muffins (same temp, just 30 minutes less to bake) and then Joey and I each ate one sitting on the couch in the dark because having the oven on without AC is still tough (but worth it for these!).  Hope your weekend was wonderful!

A list of things consumed by my head, heart, eyes, ears and stomach lately.

Avocado Toast

Please do not ask me how many times I ate avocado toast while we were in San Diego.  When in Rome Cali, right??  But actually, the trend started before that, at home, and smashing avo on top a piece of toast with a dash of nutritional yeast, a sprinkle of salt and a swish of olive oil is a pretty amazing low-maintenance breakfast.

Tin Man by Sarah Winman

I read this for book club last month and devoured it in a matter of days.  Which isn’t saying all that much because it’s fairly short, but what I’m really trying to say it that I adored it.  Prose that’s paired down, neat and concise and able to say so much by saying so little is my absolute favorite and Sarah Winman does it MASTERFULLY.  I was blown away by how quickly and effortlessly she endears you to the characters.  So much of this book is truly heartbreaking but there are so many tender moments of love, friendship and compassion too.  I hope, if you read it, you love it as much as I did.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

This is my favorite book.  Ever!  Which leaves big shoes for the movie adaptation to fill, but I’m happy to report that I mostly really liked it.  Lily James was charming and though Michiel Huisman is handsomer than I had pictured Dawsey, I didn’t mind it.  I super didn’t care for the hostility they wrote into Mrs. Maugery’s character (one of the most touching parts of the book is how instantly accepting the Guernsey characters are of Juliet) but 10 minutes in, Joey announced that he’d be reading the book and it meant more to me than he’ll ever know ♥

Cashew Yogurt

Gosh, this Cashew Yogurt (which it totally not yogurt and I feel weird about calling it that but hey, I didn’t name the recipe!) reminds me of something but I can’t place on my finger on what.  That frosting that comes with Toaster Strudel perhaps??  Anyway, I made some a couple of weeks ago and ate it every day straight for a week.  I am a major cashew lover so the flavor was so so good to me.  Need to make another batch!

The Great Alone by Kristen Hannah

I enjoyed The Nightingale so I figured I’d give another Kristen Hannah novel a try aaaaand, I didn’t totally love it.  I’ve read a few novels that had sort of an arctic setting and look, I’m sure it’s truly beautiful but I haven’t seen it with my own eyes and I’m NOT into cold weather so I think half the appeal of these types of books is lost on me right there.  The plot of this one is also sort of dramatic in a very predictable way, though I will say her writing is lovely.  So I guess I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it either.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before

I really wanted to love this movie and parts of it were cute and fun but mostly I didn’t find it believable that this adorable and completely normal girl wouldn’t have friends and I was really put off by how the good-looking, athletic, popular guy got the girl.  Totally deserving because his life seemed so unfair up until then…  Also, I felt misled by the trailer because most of the guys she writes loves letters to are basically non-entities.  Anyway, the younger sister was amazing!  (P.S. I listened to a podcast this week and the two women in it had the exact opposite opinion of everything I just said.)

Bubbly Rose Health-Ade Kombucha

Took a little booch brew break while we were on vacation so I had to hit the store and left with this pretty bottle that tasted just as lovely.

And that’s it for this time!  It’s Friday and we’re thinking of taking a stroll through RiNo to see the all the fresh street art plus a trip to the Farmers’ Market and another drive to the mountains.  How about you?!
