Weekend Things

Well it did indeed snow last week. I assumed the mountains would get it but we would just see rain and then at 4:30 on Tuesday, I looked up and there it was. I saw it with my own eyes and yet, I could not believe it. Truly the weirdest weather swing I’ve ever witnessed in Colorado, a place known for weird weather swings.

By Friday, the sun was back and it was warm enough to sit outside for lunch so Andi and I were both happy!

I definitely did not have the energy to cook dinner, so we ordered take out from Chop Shop, then drove there to pick it up. Driving to pick up food counts as an exciting outing for me nowadays 😂 We were so hungry by the time we started our 20-minute drive back home, that we maybe ate the entire container of Brussels sprouts we ordered as an appetizer. Then I was too full and only made it through half my bacon-wrapped meatloaf, but oh well! We also watched The Handmaiden, which had not one but two twists that I did not see coming at all. I’m still working out how I felt about it but it sure was interesting!

We picked a semi-ambitious waffle recipe for Saturday morning (anything with multiple components feels ambitious to me, but we better take advantage of free time and make those recipes now, right??) and they were great! At 11, we took both cars over to Presbyterian St. Luke’s hospital to have the car seats inspected and after all the agonizing and readjusting we did, they both passed without issue. They also had us practice putting a doll in the car seat, which I was not expecting to have to do, and yeah, I could use some more practice 😂

Back at home, we put a few finishing touches on the nursery and IT IS OFFICIALLY DONE! I love how it feels in there ❤❤ We took some pictures so we could share with friends/family who can’t come tour it in person and so that I can do a little post about it soon! We also got the hospital bag mostly packed. Just need a few more things in there and we’ll be good to go!

We lounged for a bit afterward and Joey made me watch I Know What You Did Last Summer because I recently mentioned that I hadn’t ever really seen it. He made me promise we’d watch it while it’s “Spooky Season,” so I gave in 😋 It was pretty much what I though it would be, but it’s so hard to watch any of the movies that Scary Movie makes fun of because I just think of all those jokes 😂 Definitely laughed out loud when Jennifer Love Hewitt was yelling “what are you waiting for?!” If you know, you know.

The weather was perfect so we took our pup on a longish walk then I made this summery dinner for us and even though I felt like I’d messed up the millet and the tofu and the sauteed veggies, it all tasted really really good and fresh together. To continue our “Spooky Season” viewing, we added a bunch of Hitchcock films to our queue and then decided to stick with the sea town theme and watch The Birds. I still want to know the reason for all those bird attacks but we liked it! Also, in the middle of the night, the blinds in our window flew up and Joey is convinced birds did it 😂

Joey got up and went on a run Sunday morning, so I ordered us breakfast sandwiches from the Wooden Spoon and it hit the spot! Andi and I took a morning nap afterward, but then I dragged myself upstairs to change out of my pajamas because my parents and sister were stopping by 😊

My mom brought me peach scones (totally ate one while reading outside later on and it was the loveliest moment) and this Celtic mother and baby necklace that I love so so much ❤ It was really nice to visit with them all, especially that part when my dad gave me a back massage 🙌 I told them we are going into strict quarantine mode around 37-38 weeks (because how AWFUL would it be if Joey had a fever when we checked into the hospital and couldn’t be there for the birth of our son?!) and I think my mom is already panicking about not seeing us for three weeks 😋

Not sure why Andi needs to look so scared when I hold him, but here we are at 34 (almost 35) weeks 🎉🎉🎉 I should probably do a third trimester post real soon! Joey grilled us some steak while I made guac and then we put it all together with some cotija for steak tacos. So good!!! The Cowboys game started right after dinner, so I offered to take Andi on a walk and it felt so nice and semi-fallish outside. We took a game break to watch Big Brother and then the Cowboys lost and Joey fake cried over that and the Rockies loss from earlier in the day 😂

How was your weekend?

Weekend Things: August is Here

I think I might love the month of August. I mean, it’s still too hot and I can barely be outside unless it’s early morning or later in the day, but all the best produce is in season and it just feels a little less busy than July (no offense to the 4th of July and my own birthday). This August in particular is extra exciting because I have two friends having babies (!!!!), my own baby shower, real baseball to watch and hopefully mostly finishing the house decor. Okay, so maybe this month isn’t less busy 😋 This weekend was wonderful, so we are off to a good start!

Did you all watch “Black is King?” I’m consistently blown away by Beyoncé and this visual album did not change that! What a gorgeous feast for the eyes. I cringed when she said “Are you with me, lions?” in The Lion King and I still cringed when the voiceover played that part, but otherwise, I loved it. How amazing is it that she’s Beyoncé but there are full songs that she’s barely in and lets another artist take the spotlight. I love that!

Joey was golfing Friday morning but when he got home, he filled our little planter with baby cactus (our entry table is officially finished and I LOVE it!) and installed this rail our company made, so, as my sister said “no grandparents (or babies) falling down the stairwell after a few drinks at Christmas or Thanksgiving” 😂

The Rockies home opener was Friday night and yeah, we had other food in the fridge to eat, but it is even the home opener without Biker Jim’s?? We drove downtown to pick the order up and there were so many people out and about in Denver! They are clearly living in a different reality than I, a person who has barely left the house, is! Let’s not talk about the end of the game (WHY, WADE DAVIS, WHY?) and talk about First Cow instead. We decided we didn’t need to watch the entire game and turned the movie on around 8, and gosh, I really loved it. It’s slow and deliberate and beautiful and I was so moved by the friendship between the two main characters. The ending made me so sad! Joey wanted more air time for the cow 😂

Joey went for a run Saturday morning, so I whipped us up some buttermilk pancakes (used this NYT recipe) and they were so tender and perfectly sweet! Andi was tired after his baby pancake 😚 Afterward we headed to the Union Station Farmers’ Market, did a quick walk through, grabbed a bag of peaches and headed back home.

Around noon, we ran a dog food errand, picked up lunch for Joey, then grabbed Sparkling Lemon Lavenders for both of us. Joey saw Cherry Bean post this drink special and knowing my obsession over all things lavender, suggested we grab one. It was so good and refreshing! Joey spent a good chunk of the rest of the day assembling a Murphy bed for our guest bedroom and who knows what I was doing. I think I finished The Bluest Eye (not a new opinion but Toni Morrison is a master of words) and watched too much of Ted 2 🤷‍♀️

Another night at the Denver Mart Drive In! It was E.T. and Back to the Future and yes, three bags of popcorn. We recently watched E.T. but it’s always worth a re-watch. A controversial opinion: E.T. is good! That scene where they all take flight on their bikes and that music blasts is just epic. We maybe didn’t make it through all of Back to the Future but I promised Joey we’ll watch the rest at home.

Slept in Sunday morning, then had breakfast outdoors before Joey started some yard work and I started working on our nursery decor. It took me HOURS and some help from Joey, but we have a table, lamp, pictures, mirror, shelves and a book rack coming and I’m so excited!!!

After I basically had a panic attack and made Joey promise to stop trying to finish putting up the Murphy bed by himself — I was having visions of the base falling on me or him or our dog!!! — he moved onto hanging some wall decor. I love the way that minimalist clock looks on our brick wall and I REALLY love the framed canvases we got for our room. Matches the lamp and bed so well. Andi was literally falling asleep with his head up when I took this picture 😂

At some point, we took a drive over to the Paco Sanchez park that our company is doing work on, so Joey could check something out but the area he needed to look at was fenced off, so we quick walked Andi around the perimeter of the park (he was well behaved, despite there being a billion people there) (again, these people are living a different reality than me!), then headed back home. Made a grilled onion blossom (Joey claimed it was my best one yet 🥰) and chicken thighs with tomato panzanella for dinner and you would not believe the mess those thighs made. Andi enjoyed licking it from the floor but then Joey had to do a deep clean later. Worth it though because this dinner tasted very good! Back inside to watch the last two episodes of Succession Season 1 and oh my god, that last episode was intense!

Please tell me what kind of start your August is off to 😊
