Weekend Things

Happy Monday from a snowy Colorado!  Since we were gone for such a big chunk of October, I feel like I’m mentally a month behind.  They started playing Christmas music on our local radio station this weekend and it caught me totally by surprise.  Snow?  Christmas music?  Holiday specials on Food Network?  I guess we’re here already!

Friday night, we saw The Lighthouse at the Alamo and let me just tell you this movie is insane.  It’s a two-hander between Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, playing a lighthouse keeper and his assistant and… their descent into insanity?  It was so bizarre and wacky and I found it wildly entertaining.  I don’t think Joey is sure how he feels about it but I loved it!

Saturday started with pancakes (these, except I left the pear out) and an episode of The Kitchen, but then I sat on the couch and read for hours!  I recently realized our book club was meeting a week earlier than I thought and that the book was a lot longer than I expected, so I needed to put some work in on it and I definitely did.  Helps that I really like it so far!  Later on, I headed into Louisville to get a facial and even got to say hi to my mom beforehand ♥

That night we had tickets to see Ray Lamontagne at the Paramount and can I get a hell yeah for a Saturday night concert?!  Those weekday ones are so brutal.  Beforehand, we grabbed dinner at Corinne.  They had a burger, chicken tenders and lobster mac and cheese on the menu, so Joey was IN.  I wasn’t feeling super into it, but then I was really impressed with the atmosphere, the service and the food.  Joey went with the chicken tenders, in case you were wondering 😛

Ray has the most interesting voice!  It’s somehow both gravely and smooth?  I don’t know how he does it, but he sounded great and the whole show was acoustic so it sounded extra beautiful.  That being said, a dark theater and a soothing sound was making me very sleepy at times!

Sunday breakfast with this sweet boy and his parents!  Hannah and I got together at the end of August, but the five of us hadn’t been altogether since July and that is unacceptable!  I love seeing that little family and I can hardly believe Mason is just about to turn two.  When did this happen??  He gave me the sweetest little hug before we all dispersed ♥

Joey went to watch football after breakfast, so I used the alone time to make lunch salads for the week and… you guessed it, READ!  Is this how people read more than I do?  They stop watching TV and movies and scrolling Twitter and just actually read?  I also went to yoga for the first time since September!!!  Felt so nice and my shoulders are only slightly mad today.

For dinner, we made a Buttermilk-Marinated Roast Chicken and guys… SO GOOD!  I saw Samin Nosrat make one on Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat and have been meaning to make it ever since.  I’m so glad I finally got around to it!  Besides the forethought required to marinate it a day in advance, it was wildly easy to make and so moist and flavorful.  Try it out!  We also made Glazed Beets with Creme Fraiche and Pistachios (except I used Greek yogurt instead of creme fraiche) on the side and we loved it!

Please tell me what you did this weekend 🙂

Weekend Things

It’s November, it’s the Denver Film Fest, it’s the end of Daylight Saving Time!  Even though I feel like we skipped right over fall and headed straight into winter — I feel so mentally unprepared for snow and darkness and holiday madness — it’s not ALL bad, because it also means Avs games, the Denver Film Fest and more light at the beginning of the day (for a little while at least).

We’ve been Instagram-stalking the Yuan Wonton food truck for a couple of months and were FINALLY able to make it to one of their stops on Friday!  They had quite the crowd at Strange Craft Beer Company, but it was worth the wait because those dumplings and wontons and soup were all so spicy good.  They were out of soup dumplings by the time we got there, so we are already planning to find them again soon.

Afterward, we went to our first Avs game of the season and… they lost, so we must be bad luck 😦  Loss aside, it was a good time and I was only sort of distracted by the many groups of people wearing Where’s Waldo costumes??

Saturday morning waffles!  I made these Whole Wheat Pumpkin Waffles while Joey picked up coffee beans and then I used them to make a pumpkin spice latte that was NOT GOOD.  Oh well, because the waffles were great!  Our pup is very loungey but also very protective of his ball 😛  Later on, I took a pair of boots to Dardano’s to get re-heeled (they do the best job!) and then we completely cleaned out and re-arranged our closet.  It seriously felt so good.  Fall/winter sweaters are out!

I just want to tell you that I was greatly frustrated by the Denver Film Festival this year.  Months ago, we bought a ticket package (6 tickets at a discounted price), then realized the tickets would go on sale while we were in Rome.  We walked all the way back to our hotel, so I could access the wifi and buy the tickets.  The lineup was so good but ALL the movies I wanted to see were “Special Presentations” that we could not use our ticket package for.  UGH!!!  We ended up having to pick movies we weren’t all that excited for instead and I was really bummed.  That being said, our first movie, Saint Frances, ended up being wonderful, so what do I know!  We both really loved it ♥

Afterward, we headed to Arvada to have dinner with Steve, Lorna, Nick and Adam at the Arvada Tavern.  I dug the speakeasy vibe and their cocktails are so good!  We made it back home in time for SNL and though I do not love Kristen Stewart, I laughed (way too hard) at that Ginuwine “Pony” skit.

I know people talk about getting an extra hour of sleep when we “fall back,” but um, we just woke up at the same time, except the clock read an hour earlier.  Boo!  I got my hair cut a few hours later and when I got back home, I lightly suggested going out for lunch before DFF Round 2, to which Joey suggested Cart-Driver and SAY NO MORE!  It happened to be pretty nice weather, so we had our pizza out on the patio and it was all perfect.  We saw Sybil and it was just okay.  You can’t win em all, I guess.

Later on, we cooked this Seared Steak with Horseradish Cream Sauce and Crispy Brussels Sprouts and it was AMAZING!  That sauce though ♥  My sister got a Plated subscription, then generously gifted this meal to us so we could try it out and not only was it really quick and easy, but super delicious.  Not going to brag too much, but I cooked that steak perfectly 😛  Plus, my sister is just the best.  Oh and we watched The King, which is somehow long but covers such little ground?  Only Timotheé Chalamet could pull of that bowl cut.  He was really good but Robert Pattinson?  Not so much.

What did you do this weekend??
