What I’m Loving Lately: A Summer 2020 Edition

If there’s one thing COVID-19 has taught me, it’s that none of the things I thought mattered actually matter. As in, I’ve survived without going to the movie theater, wearing real clothes, dining out or getting my nails done. I can still cook good food, walk my pup, visit with my immediate family and catch up on the billions of old movies I haven’t seen, so I guess I’m good! Here’s some of the things that are still bringing me joy this summer season, as weird as it may be.

FRUIT!

“What are you craving??” is possibly my least favorite pregnancy-related question because my answer is so boring: nothing really, except maybe ALL THE FRUIT. Watermelon, cherries, strawberries, grapes and most recently PEACHES!!! I asked Joey if he’d ever cried because he was so happy to be eating a peach and he said “definitely not,” so yeah, me neither…

Weekly Coffee Walk

We are so close to Tennyson Street that we can walk there! I had planned to make it a once weekly jog, but on our first outing Joey told me “you know, a long walk is fine too” and I haven’t jogged since 😂 Once we get to Tennyson, I grab us coffee at Downpours and we stroll on back. Oh and last week, we tried the donuts from Berkeley Donuts (aka Hops & Pie) and man, were they good!!! We split two and sent the rest to the office 😀

An Improved Bed Situation

I’ve hated our mattress, bed skirt, duvet cover and sheets for so long, so I vowed to upgrade once we moved. We shelled out for a Tempurpedic and I have gone from guaranteed nightly hip pain to like once or twice a week minor hip pain, so it already seems worth it to me! Plus Joey can’t feel me getting out of bed to use the bathroom, so he’s happy 😋 Also, my parents got us new linens and a quilt for my birthday and they are so so much better (and cooler) than what we had before!

Baby’s Crib!

Speaking of beds, baby’s is up! This is literally the only progress we’ve made on the nursery (waiting on some wallpaper samples before we can choose a paint color!) but I love it so much!!! I cannot leave or enter my room next door without peeking in at it first. I mean, he won’t sleep in there until at least six months after he’s born, but it’ll be ready when he is!

Dining Al Fresco

Okay, this is a summer favorite every year, but working from home means I sometimes get to sit out there for breakfast, lunch and dinner! And we have a little pergola, so there’s shade for these 95° days (THANK GOD!). Feels so good to sit out there for dinner when the heat is starting to wear off and we’re not distracted by the TV.

A Better Behaved Pup

Okay, not going to pretend Andi is a perfect angel now, but there’s much less activity going on the yards next to us than at the last house, so sometimes I can let him outside and leave him unsupervised for big blocks of time. I’ll sneak peeks at him and he’ll just be chilling in the sun. It’s the cutest! Also, I let him out when Joey tells me he’s headed home from the office twice a week and he patiently waits for his return. Now if only he would stop barking his head off at every delivery person that shows up at our house!

Please tell me what you’re loving in this unusual summer season 😊

What I’m Loving Lately: Late Summer Edition

On Tuesday, we went to Red Rocks for our last concert of the summer — Young the Giant was incredible and Sameer’s dance moves are the very best! — and it was legitimately chilly!  Last night, my dad texted me about how it’s getting darker earlier in the evening.  I’m feeling that (self-created) pressure to do everything I haven’t crossed off my Summer Bucket List and all of this can mean only one thing: it’s officially late summer.  But, I’m going to refer to it as “late summer” instead of “the end of summer” because that’s just too depressing for a Friday post 🙂  Here’s some stuff I’ve been into lately!

Binge Mode

Guys, I spend a significant amount of my life trying to hide how deeply immersed in Game of Thrones I truly am.  But I fear I’m actually doing a terrible job because my blog, my Twitter account and my real life conversations seems to be about 80% GoT references and 20% food.  So now that it’s out in the open, I wanna tell you that I’ve been listening to this Podcast (so much that I’m actually speaking like the podcast hosts now — shouts to Binge Mode!) and now I even have Joey listening!  It’s pretty legit and also really funny, so I highly recommend it.

The Savvy Cook

Mentioned this cookbook here and there but I’m making my way through some of the MANY recipes I have dogeared and so far, I’m loving everything we’ve tried!  Made some egg-free French toast with MISO-DATE BUTTER (can you even?!) and it was so so good!  I can get weird about eggs sometimes so I was delighted to find a recipe for French toast that did away with them completely.  Also, that butter is a sweet savory dream and leftovers make for some incredible oatmeal.

Iced Lattes

In the summer, Joey is ALL ABOUT iced coffee and I get it because that stuff can be incredibly good but I’ve been falling for a creamier cold coffee drink lately, so lattes are where its at.  My local coffee shop just switched from using almond milk to oat milk, but as long as it tastes like caffeinated cereal milk, I’m don’t really care what kind of non-dairy milk they use.  P.S. I ordered an iced lavender latte last week and life felt too good to be true.

Peaches

I truly love a stone fruit.  And there is NOTHING better than a perfectly ripe, sweet, in-season peach.  For real!  You know when you get one that tastes so good it’s almost like you’re eating cobbler?  And your entire summer is built around finding THAT ONE perfect peach?  I’ve been lucky enough to eat several of those this summer and it makes me wonder what I’ve done to deserve such happiness.

Gel Manicures

Growing up, I always had great nails.  Somewhere around 2011, they started to suck.  They were thin and brittle and ripping on the sides ALL THE TIME.  I’m gonna chaulk it up to a major increase in cooking, aka washing a lot of dishes, aka drying my nails out but who really knows.  What I DO know is that I got a “Oxygenating Medical Grade 10-Free Gel Manicure” at my fav place at the beginning of June and my nails have been killer ever since!  I’m not going to question this magic, I’m just going to enjoy it.

On the weekend docket: Rockies, Yoga on the Rocks, Frozen Live, smiles, hugs, LOVE!
