Father’s Day Weekend 2023

What a busy but good good weekend with so much to celebrate, including Dempsey’s first trip to the movie theater, two Father’s Day BBQs and Miss Lydia’s half birthday!

Just my normal Friday, trying to do a million things while also working from home but I was cleaned up and ready to go by 2:30 because I had a date with my little man! Joey and I picked him up from Grandma’s and took him to see his first movie in a theater! We had to keep reminding him to whisper (yelling “is it over?!” at the end of every trailer was both funny and mortifying at the same time) but otherwise, he did so good! And I personally thought Elemental was very cute, though I didn’t feel like it made a lasting impression on Dempsey. Picked Lyds up afterward then dinner, kid bedtime, TV time and adult bedtime.

Lydia was up at 4:45 AM on Saturday 😱 Very cute to hear her “talking” to herself in her bassinet but a bit too early. It woke Joey up, so he took her downstairs where she fell back asleep but he did not 😬 I woke up a few hours later to Dempsey yelling about something or other 🤷🏻‍♀️ And then we proceeded to have kind of a rushed and busy morning. At least there were banana bread pancakes á la Joey! Made it to soccer then spent the 45 minutes of practice chasing Dempsey around and trying to get him to stop hitting his teammates. Ugh. We’re working on it and I know kids his age hit but it doesn’t feel the greatest when it’s YOUR kid doing the hitting. Got him home and fed (my sis stopped by and got to spend lunchtime with us 🤍) then put them both down for their naps and rushed around some more before finally sitting down to relax for a bit. It’s funny, I know we were scrambling to get stuff done and now I can’t even tell you what any of it was, though it did involve making macaroni salad 😅😅

After naps, we packed the kids up and headed over to Steve and Lorna’s to celebrate Father’s Day with that side of the family and it was baby central! Four babies, two of whom were newborns! It was so sweet to see 🤍 Plus we got to visit with Joey’s grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. One of the best things about being a breastfeeding introvert is having a reason to sneak away for a few minutes. Got a four generation photo that now includes another dad and two more babies!

Sunday means Happy Father’s Day and Happy Half Birthday to our little girl! Can you believe it?? Joey had an early tee time with his own dad, so it was just me and the kids for the first half of the day. In many ways it’s harder to be on my own with two kids but in some ways — like juggling conversations 🤪 — it’s easier. That little girl took a good nap and Demps and I wrapped some Father’s Day gifts and played outside till she was up then we all took a walk to the store just to get out of the house and someplace cool.

At 2, my family came over for Father’s Day BBQ #2 and it was a smaller group than we usually have but it was really nice. My mom brought everything for pulled pork sandwiches and my sis and I made some sides to go along. All of it was very good! Lyds is SO grabby for our food lately. I’m waiting to get the official go-ahead from our pediatrician next Monday to start solids but it can’t come soon enough! Pulled out a cherry streusel pie for dessert and it was so good, though clearly Dempsey was more into the ice cream 😂 He also showed us how he does a jumping jack and I nearly cried, it was so cute! Everyone was packed up and gone by 7ish, so we got the kids to bed on time then collapsed on the couch. We’ve been watching Black Bird on Apple TV+ and it’s creepy but super good. Only half an episode to go! Hope everyone had a nice weekend 😊

Weekend Things

Hello and Happy Monday 👋 We had a really good weekend! Three home-cooked dinners, time outside, Joey and I watched a whole movie (and finished the final season of Barry!) and Dempsey started Saturday morning soccer!!!! So fun, we had the best time and Coach Joe did such a good job managing his team of Orange Iguanas all by himself. Truly felt like summer and I’m so happy to be here finally 🤍

Joey had a golf tournament Friday morning so he was off bright and early and I got to get the kids up — always time to cuddle with baby sis! — and over to Grandma’s then went home to look for this flamingo keychain Dempsey kept asking me about. Located it under his Mercedes 😂 Made a really good dinner of honey-chipotle grilled chicken thighs, Mexican rice and plantains for dinner then chased Dempsey around the backyard to get him to eat any of it 😅 After kiddo bedtime, we watched the finale of Top Chef and what a good season it was!

Sorry to spam you with soccer photos but what a good morning we had! Actually, I’m just remembering it was a mad dash to get out the door — timing baby feedings around other plans continues to be a stressful time for me — and Dempsey had a meltdown over bubbles on our walk to the park but once we got there, we had the best time. Joey volunteered as coach and I was so impressed by him. He was so good with the kids and they seemed pretty on task, especially compared to the team on the next field where kids were running off and crying the whole time 😅 Demps had quite the crowd and kept wandering over to stand with us but he participated a good bit too! He’s one of the youngest on the team. Baby sis took a nap then got to hang with Aunt Bean 💞

Post afternoon naps, we played outside and then Joey made smash burgers for us and maybe set off all the fire alarms in the process 😂😂 Worth it though because these were really good and Dempsey ran right over to the table and devoured his mini burger! I was so happy to see it. He’s getting way better at eating stuff like tacos and sandwiches, instead of the deconstructed versions and it’s truly the cutest! After the kids were asleep, Joey and I started Air but paused halfway through to go to bed ourselves. Lydia has been struggling with falling and staying asleep on her own the past few days and it’s killing us all but we’re toughing it out and hoping it’s just a phase.

We were deciding between two different coffee shops Sunday morning but landed on Weathervane Café, which we hadn’t been to in SO long. Had the whole upstairs to ourselves which was good considering Dempsey wouldn’t stay still. He ended up eating more of my breakfast sandwich than the oatmeal we got him, but I’m happy to share. He found a “cool spot” to eat it in too 😂 Miss Lydia is suddenly very into anything we’re eating, which is a good sign for starting her on solids at the end of this month but does make it rather difficult to hold her AND eat.

Back at home, I went for a run, Joey went for a run, Dempsey had lunch — he wanted he and Baby Sis to wear my bobby pins afterward 🥺 — and then I did salads and prepped dinner before Joey and I sat down to finish our movie during afternoon nap time. I thought it was just okay. An interesting story even if we all know how it’s going to end. But just so many needle drops and bordering on cheesy. After Demps was up from his nap, he and Joey built a putting green — Joey is literally insane for letting Dempsey hammer a nail anywhere near his fingers — and it turned out so cute! Sat down to bowls of red beans and rice for dinner and I wasn’t sure if Dempsey would be into it but he was VERY into it! My heart was so happy when he asked for seconds. We put the kids to bed and finished Barry and I felt kind of disappointed by the ending. Anyone else? Wishing you all a happy week!
