Weekend Things: August is Here

I think I might love the month of August. I mean, it’s still too hot and I can barely be outside unless it’s early morning or later in the day, but all the best produce is in season and it just feels a little less busy than July (no offense to the 4th of July and my own birthday). This August in particular is extra exciting because I have two friends having babies (!!!!), my own baby shower, real baseball to watch and hopefully mostly finishing the house decor. Okay, so maybe this month isn’t less busy 😋 This weekend was wonderful, so we are off to a good start!

Did you all watch “Black is King?” I’m consistently blown away by Beyoncé and this visual album did not change that! What a gorgeous feast for the eyes. I cringed when she said “Are you with me, lions?” in The Lion King and I still cringed when the voiceover played that part, but otherwise, I loved it. How amazing is it that she’s Beyoncé but there are full songs that she’s barely in and lets another artist take the spotlight. I love that!

Joey was golfing Friday morning but when he got home, he filled our little planter with baby cactus (our entry table is officially finished and I LOVE it!) and installed this rail our company made, so, as my sister said “no grandparents (or babies) falling down the stairwell after a few drinks at Christmas or Thanksgiving” 😂

The Rockies home opener was Friday night and yeah, we had other food in the fridge to eat, but it is even the home opener without Biker Jim’s?? We drove downtown to pick the order up and there were so many people out and about in Denver! They are clearly living in a different reality than I, a person who has barely left the house, is! Let’s not talk about the end of the game (WHY, WADE DAVIS, WHY?) and talk about First Cow instead. We decided we didn’t need to watch the entire game and turned the movie on around 8, and gosh, I really loved it. It’s slow and deliberate and beautiful and I was so moved by the friendship between the two main characters. The ending made me so sad! Joey wanted more air time for the cow 😂

Joey went for a run Saturday morning, so I whipped us up some buttermilk pancakes (used this NYT recipe) and they were so tender and perfectly sweet! Andi was tired after his baby pancake 😚 Afterward we headed to the Union Station Farmers’ Market, did a quick walk through, grabbed a bag of peaches and headed back home.

Around noon, we ran a dog food errand, picked up lunch for Joey, then grabbed Sparkling Lemon Lavenders for both of us. Joey saw Cherry Bean post this drink special and knowing my obsession over all things lavender, suggested we grab one. It was so good and refreshing! Joey spent a good chunk of the rest of the day assembling a Murphy bed for our guest bedroom and who knows what I was doing. I think I finished The Bluest Eye (not a new opinion but Toni Morrison is a master of words) and watched too much of Ted 2 🤷‍♀️

Another night at the Denver Mart Drive In! It was E.T. and Back to the Future and yes, three bags of popcorn. We recently watched E.T. but it’s always worth a re-watch. A controversial opinion: E.T. is good! That scene where they all take flight on their bikes and that music blasts is just epic. We maybe didn’t make it through all of Back to the Future but I promised Joey we’ll watch the rest at home.

Slept in Sunday morning, then had breakfast outdoors before Joey started some yard work and I started working on our nursery decor. It took me HOURS and some help from Joey, but we have a table, lamp, pictures, mirror, shelves and a book rack coming and I’m so excited!!!

After I basically had a panic attack and made Joey promise to stop trying to finish putting up the Murphy bed by himself — I was having visions of the base falling on me or him or our dog!!! — he moved onto hanging some wall decor. I love the way that minimalist clock looks on our brick wall and I REALLY love the framed canvases we got for our room. Matches the lamp and bed so well. Andi was literally falling asleep with his head up when I took this picture 😂

At some point, we took a drive over to the Paco Sanchez park that our company is doing work on, so Joey could check something out but the area he needed to look at was fenced off, so we quick walked Andi around the perimeter of the park (he was well behaved, despite there being a billion people there) (again, these people are living a different reality than me!), then headed back home. Made a grilled onion blossom (Joey claimed it was my best one yet 🥰) and chicken thighs with tomato panzanella for dinner and you would not believe the mess those thighs made. Andi enjoyed licking it from the floor but then Joey had to do a deep clean later. Worth it though because this dinner tasted very good! Back inside to watch the last two episodes of Succession Season 1 and oh my god, that last episode was intense!

Please tell me what kind of start your August is off to 😊

Weekend Things

This weekend felt weird!  By all accounts — one last Rockies game/win, leaf peeping, seeing Hustlers (!!!), extreme Sunday productivity, yoga and Sunday wing night — it was eventful and fun but look, we are leaving for a two week Italian vacation on Thursday, so I can’t say I didn’t feel a bit distracted.

Oy, this Rockies season!  It wasn’t our best (or really our worst), but we went out on top by sweeping a playoff-bound Milwaukee Brewers team.  Also, one last trip to Biker Jim’s.  I was just two dogs from trying them ALL this season!  If you care, I’d rank them (best to worst) as follows: Elk Jalapeno Cheddar, All Beef (surprisingly good!), Louisiana Red Hots, Bacon Cheddar, Southwest Buffalo, Rattlesnake Pheasant, Vegan, Wild Boar, Jack-a-Lope, German Veal, Chicken Peach (never again).  Mostly I learned that most of those dogs are like way smaller than that bun.  Can’t we get a better-fitting bun??  Also, the real MVP is the Biker Jim’s “Classic” topping of caramelized onions and cream cheese!

Took so long for the leaves to change this year that I almost thought we might miss it entirely but it was “peak” this weekend, so we made a plan to head to Kenosha to maybe hike, or maybe just drive through.  We got up there later than usual and it was PACKED!!!  But if you just drive up a bit, past the parking lot, you basically have the trail to yourself.  We drove up for a while then found the exact same spot to park as last year, where we ate lunch and hey, we remembered a fork this time around!  Can I just say how wonderful it is to be able to drive just a few hours to see these stunning sights and breathe that fresh mountain air?  There’s nothing like it!

Back at home, we had our groceries delivered while we parked it on the couch and watched Snatch.  Such is life in 2019!  It was my first time watching this movie and wow, I definitely laughed at the some of the stylistic choices — namely that heist scene at the beginning — but I did appreciate it as a piece of film culture.  I also feel like I’ll probably forget the plot by tomorrow and mainly just remember that crazy accent Brad Pitt is doing.

A movie I’ll not soon forget?  HUSTLERS!  Guys, it’s good, it’s so so good!  Not only does Jennifer Lopez look INCREDIBLE but she is just in full control of this performance and she makes it look EFFORTLESS.  I know it seems like the story of a group of female strippers conning men, but at its heart, it’s the story of a relationship between two women and it’s goddamn beautiful.  It also says a lot about money and power, but you’re having so much fun that none of it feels forced or boring.

Sunday started with breakfast at Portside — I have a love-hate relationship with this place because I love sitting out on their little patio and the food is really good but man, house made almond milk always tastes so bad to me and it smells floral in an extremely funereal way in there and I do NOT love it.  After, I prepped some wings for dinner (!!!), made salads for the week, cleaned the bathroom, picked up lunch and some new mascara and packed for our vacation!  I feel so proud of myself!!!  I want to pretend I am a totally chill and laid back person, but vacation in general, and especially one that involves a nine and a half our flight and a country that speaks a different language, makes me feel a little panicky.  I’m hoping being mostly packed means I won’t wake up in the middle of the night thinking about the stuff I don’t want to forget to put in my suitcase for the rest of the week 😛  I think I feel ready!

I even had time to make it to yoga and wow, it felt so good!  The Cowboys played the Saints on Sunday night football and while I still can’t get behind the idea of football, I can TOTALLY get behind the idea of football food and there’s nothing better than not paying attention to the game and instead digging into a plate of wings.  Plus, these were REALLY GOOD and I straight up LOVED this miso roasted cauliflower.  A+ evening, even though the Cowboys lost.  I am going to do my best to keep my head in the game work-wise for the next three days but it already feels so hard!
