Weekend Things

It’s November, it’s the Denver Film Fest, it’s the end of Daylight Saving Time!  Even though I feel like we skipped right over fall and headed straight into winter — I feel so mentally unprepared for snow and darkness and holiday madness — it’s not ALL bad, because it also means Avs games, the Denver Film Fest and more light at the beginning of the day (for a little while at least).

We’ve been Instagram-stalking the Yuan Wonton food truck for a couple of months and were FINALLY able to make it to one of their stops on Friday!  They had quite the crowd at Strange Craft Beer Company, but it was worth the wait because those dumplings and wontons and soup were all so spicy good.  They were out of soup dumplings by the time we got there, so we are already planning to find them again soon.

Afterward, we went to our first Avs game of the season and… they lost, so we must be bad luck 😦  Loss aside, it was a good time and I was only sort of distracted by the many groups of people wearing Where’s Waldo costumes??

Saturday morning waffles!  I made these Whole Wheat Pumpkin Waffles while Joey picked up coffee beans and then I used them to make a pumpkin spice latte that was NOT GOOD.  Oh well, because the waffles were great!  Our pup is very loungey but also very protective of his ball 😛  Later on, I took a pair of boots to Dardano’s to get re-heeled (they do the best job!) and then we completely cleaned out and re-arranged our closet.  It seriously felt so good.  Fall/winter sweaters are out!

I just want to tell you that I was greatly frustrated by the Denver Film Festival this year.  Months ago, we bought a ticket package (6 tickets at a discounted price), then realized the tickets would go on sale while we were in Rome.  We walked all the way back to our hotel, so I could access the wifi and buy the tickets.  The lineup was so good but ALL the movies I wanted to see were “Special Presentations” that we could not use our ticket package for.  UGH!!!  We ended up having to pick movies we weren’t all that excited for instead and I was really bummed.  That being said, our first movie, Saint Frances, ended up being wonderful, so what do I know!  We both really loved it ♥

Afterward, we headed to Arvada to have dinner with Steve, Lorna, Nick and Adam at the Arvada Tavern.  I dug the speakeasy vibe and their cocktails are so good!  We made it back home in time for SNL and though I do not love Kristen Stewart, I laughed (way too hard) at that Ginuwine “Pony” skit.

I know people talk about getting an extra hour of sleep when we “fall back,” but um, we just woke up at the same time, except the clock read an hour earlier.  Boo!  I got my hair cut a few hours later and when I got back home, I lightly suggested going out for lunch before DFF Round 2, to which Joey suggested Cart-Driver and SAY NO MORE!  It happened to be pretty nice weather, so we had our pizza out on the patio and it was all perfect.  We saw Sybil and it was just okay.  You can’t win em all, I guess.

Later on, we cooked this Seared Steak with Horseradish Cream Sauce and Crispy Brussels Sprouts and it was AMAZING!  That sauce though ♥  My sister got a Plated subscription, then generously gifted this meal to us so we could try it out and not only was it really quick and easy, but super delicious.  Not going to brag too much, but I cooked that steak perfectly 😛  Plus, my sister is just the best.  Oh and we watched The King, which is somehow long but covers such little ground?  Only Timotheé Chalamet could pull of that bowl cut.  He was really good but Robert Pattinson?  Not so much.

What did you do this weekend??

A Weekend Reset

I can’t start this post until I backtrack and talk about how our trip to New Orleans — I WILL tell you about that trip very very soon — ended with everyone getting sick.  Like really sick.  It’s a week later and I’m just finally feeling normal again, but only after a weekend where Joey and I were both DESPERATE to “revamp?” “recharge?” “recommit?”  Reset!  I think Joey’s exact words were “I’d really like to eat a salad!”

This probably also has something to do with the “Spring Cleaning” mentality, but we needed a clean the house, restock the fridge, actually go to the gym, pick up a damn book weekend to rid us of all feelings of winter blah and sickness.  I feel so much better now!

And now I would like to offer you three sets of “Dinner + TV” photos, thankyouverymuch!  Friday was Sweet Corn + Zucchini Pie (please note that I was couch-ridden and Joey took a “Lauren food pic” for me ♥♥♥) + Leaving Neverland Part 2.  Have you guys watched?  I’ve seen some buzz about it, including news about Michael Jackson music being pulled from some radio stations or The Simpsons taking their MJ episode out of circulation and it confuses me because, though the documentary goes into more detail than I’d known, none of this information was new or shocking to me.  It is as disturbing and creepy and believable to me now as it has been for years and years.  We had a long talk about it all afterward and… man, this stuff is sad.

Saturday morning started with pancakes, a much much much needed trip to the gym — aside from that vacation-induced exercise break and then that sickness-induced exercise break, my workout motivation has just been lacking in general, but breaking a sweat finally felt good! — then a trip to the grocery.  Afterward, kombucha, Quickles for bánh mì sliders later this week and sitting down to read.  I think Joey did something like 10 loads of laundry for us ♥

Ended the night with steak + Creamy Chive Potatoes (our fav!) + A Serious Man.  Let’s not talk about how we smoked up the entire house and set off the fire alarm while cooking that steak and instead talk about how funny the movie was.  We were left sort of confused at the end, but maybe it’s best to not try to understand all that a Coen Brothers movie has to say and just “accept the mystery.”  Anyway, we laughed a lot.

Well, here’s what NOT to do the day Daylight Saving Time starts… wake up tired, drink an extra cup of coffee to cope then not be able to go to bed that night because you’re WIDE awake.  Anyway, sleep problems aside, Sunday was a wonderful day that started with breakfast and reading at Black Eye Coffee and afterward, involved making salads for the week and giving our pup a bath.  Between Joey giving him a haircut on Saturday and me scrubbing him on Sunday, he’s a whole new doggy!

I headed to yoga later on and then we cooked Dijon-Herb Crusted Salmon with Warm Buttered Radish and Edamame Salad for dinner and watched the last two episodes of Shameless.  We’ve been watching this show for eight years (!!) and it was Emmy Rossum’s last show and I maybe cried.  I really wish they had just decided to end it all here because, as much as I love it and as good as the other characters are, I just don’t know what Shameless will be without its Fiona 😦

In other news, it’s supposed to snow again this week but my heart and mind have officially moved on to spring, so you can find me dreaming of iced coffee and baseball.
