Weekend Things

Happy Monday from a snowy Colorado!  Since we were gone for such a big chunk of October, I feel like I’m mentally a month behind.  They started playing Christmas music on our local radio station this weekend and it caught me totally by surprise.  Snow?  Christmas music?  Holiday specials on Food Network?  I guess we’re here already!

Friday night, we saw The Lighthouse at the Alamo and let me just tell you this movie is insane.  It’s a two-hander between Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, playing a lighthouse keeper and his assistant and… their descent into insanity?  It was so bizarre and wacky and I found it wildly entertaining.  I don’t think Joey is sure how he feels about it but I loved it!

Saturday started with pancakes (these, except I left the pear out) and an episode of The Kitchen, but then I sat on the couch and read for hours!  I recently realized our book club was meeting a week earlier than I thought and that the book was a lot longer than I expected, so I needed to put some work in on it and I definitely did.  Helps that I really like it so far!  Later on, I headed into Louisville to get a facial and even got to say hi to my mom beforehand ♥

That night we had tickets to see Ray Lamontagne at the Paramount and can I get a hell yeah for a Saturday night concert?!  Those weekday ones are so brutal.  Beforehand, we grabbed dinner at Corinne.  They had a burger, chicken tenders and lobster mac and cheese on the menu, so Joey was IN.  I wasn’t feeling super into it, but then I was really impressed with the atmosphere, the service and the food.  Joey went with the chicken tenders, in case you were wondering 😛

Ray has the most interesting voice!  It’s somehow both gravely and smooth?  I don’t know how he does it, but he sounded great and the whole show was acoustic so it sounded extra beautiful.  That being said, a dark theater and a soothing sound was making me very sleepy at times!

Sunday breakfast with this sweet boy and his parents!  Hannah and I got together at the end of August, but the five of us hadn’t been altogether since July and that is unacceptable!  I love seeing that little family and I can hardly believe Mason is just about to turn two.  When did this happen??  He gave me the sweetest little hug before we all dispersed ♥

Joey went to watch football after breakfast, so I used the alone time to make lunch salads for the week and… you guessed it, READ!  Is this how people read more than I do?  They stop watching TV and movies and scrolling Twitter and just actually read?  I also went to yoga for the first time since September!!!  Felt so nice and my shoulders are only slightly mad today.

For dinner, we made a Buttermilk-Marinated Roast Chicken and guys… SO GOOD!  I saw Samin Nosrat make one on Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat and have been meaning to make it ever since.  I’m so glad I finally got around to it!  Besides the forethought required to marinate it a day in advance, it was wildly easy to make and so moist and flavorful.  Try it out!  We also made Glazed Beets with Creme Fraiche and Pistachios (except I used Greek yogurt instead of creme fraiche) on the side and we loved it!

Please tell me what you did this weekend 🙂

Weekend Things

I thought last weekend was a busy one, but man, this weekend was too!  And it was busy in a social way, so even though this introvert might need a few recovery days, it was such a fun time.

I snuck out of work early on Friday to go have my nails done and look, I’ve already chipped a few, but oh well because they’re all the same length for once!  Afterward, we walked our pup and fed ourselves leftovers before heading to the Rockies game.  We lost — and we should have won — and I was cold by the end, but it was our first “normal” (aka not Opening Day or a big group) game and that part felt so good.

Saturday started with pancakes and then I ran into Louisville to have my eyebrows done and wow, I think it’d been something like five years since I’d done that?!  Meanwhile, Joey was at home unpacking the cabinet system we just got for our garage and he was possibly way too excited about it.  Lunchtime featured my newest kombucha which looked so pretty with those flecks of cayenne and then we were off to the races (figuratively, but also literally?).

Joey’s grandpa is 80 (today!) so there was a Kentucky Derby-themed party in his honor.  Everyone was looking dapper and we streamed the race during the party, so we could all watch that crazy turn of events unfold.  I felt so sad for the jockey who won then got disqualified!  We had a wedding to attend afterward (which worked out attire-wise), so we left celebration #1 for celebration #2 around 5:30 and whoa, that wedding started RIGHT on time.  There was mild discussion of Game of Thrones at our table and I definitely heard the party table behind us toast “To the respect of women.  To people respecting women.” Superbad fans unite!  There was also a dance battle and a fake arrest of the groom?  Anything goes at a wedding!  We left around 11:30 because we missed our dog, but don’t think we didn’t take cupcakes to go 🙂

Sunday started with another 5-mile run.  I later made a “cinco de miles” joke to Joey and he told me it didn’t really work… rude!  Then I picked up iced coffee, then I made a trip to the store (even though we had JUST had our groceries delivered because they always mess stuff up, ugh!), then we threw together salads and ourselves just in time for the Rockies game because… Lori’s birthday!!!  We had taco lunch before, then sat in some amazing seats for the game and hey, THEY WON.  Obviously had to celebrate with ice cream afterward.  This is maybe the second time this week that we’ve been to Smith + Canon, a brand new coffee/ice cream shop on Colfax.  I cannot believe how good this ice cream is!

Back at home, I walked Dog (did I mention we call him this now?…) and it felt like summertime out there ♥  Then, when the sun went down, we sat down for GOT and I’m still not really sure how I felt about the episode.  I did not see much of it coming, but surprise doesn’t equate enjoyment.  Mostly, I don’t know if the show is actually going here or not, but the “Mad Queen” discourse I’ve seen online is endlessly boring to me.  Daenerys is a woman in a position of power and GASP, shows emotion, so she must be “mad.”  Gosh, where have I see this story line before??  What did everyone else think??
