Weekend Things

Another weekend, another bachelor party excursion for Joey.  Which means I was riding solo again and thinking a lot about the pros and cons of that situation.  I was peak happy taking my sister to the Rockies game, riding to the Farmers’ Market, reading in the backyard, spending quality time with my parents and waking up early for a Sunday morning run.  I’m less indecisive when it’s just me.

But, my inability to chill is SO MUCH WORSE when I’m alone.  No one is there to point out that I haven’t sat down all day and that I’m rushing through like 80 projects instead of using the weekend to relax, to re-energize and to enjoy this sweet summer moment.  So I guess what I’m saying is find a partner that keeps you lazy from burning the candle at both ends ♥

I got to have dinner with my sister on Tuesday and take her to a Rockies game on Friday, so I’m the luckiest!  This entire Diamondbacks series was godawful so I was thankful for sister distraction.  Also, I pointed out that it was 8 PM, the sun was still out and it was warm enough to be plenty comfortable in shorts and short sleeves.  Isn’t summer the best??

Andi Dog would not even sleep in our room with me on Friday (anguish face emoji) but we did get up Saturday morning and run around in the backyard for a bit before I made myself a pretty pancake breakfast, complete with coconut whipped cream.  I thought I was the happiest I could be, but then I biked to the Farmers’ Market and saw TONY WOLTERS!!!!  Oh and I bought these stunner heirloom tomatoes.

Look, I totally planned on going to the mall to find a dress for a wedding we’re going to THIS WEEKEND (why’m I so plan ahead about some thing but so last minute about other things??) but then… I just stayed home instead.  It was a million degrees outside, so Andi and I hid in the AC of our room and I read while he rested his little pup head on my leg ♥  Later on, I headed to Elitch’s for our company picnic and even though I was feeling anxious about going to a social gathering by myself, it was actually good and fine and fun!

Took my parents to dinner that night!  Or, rather, they took me to dinner but I got to pick the location and I picked FNG, which Joey and I spotted on our way to Blue Pan Pizza over MDW.  It looked busy but they sat us right away and while my inner fake food critic wished there had been less of a delay between appetizer #1 and appetizer #2, we actually weren’t in any rush so it was okay to linger for a while.  I ordered my mom a beer, ate a really good burger slider and watched my dad eat “fatboy mashed potatoes” 🙂  It was so nice outside when we left so we walked around, gazing at pretty Highlands homes, then sat in the backyard for a bit when we got back to my house.  It was all the best!

I got up too early Sunday morning to beat the heat and go for a run.  I maybe needed a nap later on, but when I’m jogging alongside the Platte River and it’s cool and quiet and the only other people out are fellow morning exercisers, it feels so worth getting up early.  Backyard breakfast and reading in the hammock followed my run and then my Instacart order arrived (all packed in a box which I thought was a genius way to avoid plastic bags!) and I rushed around making Green Salad with Dilly Chickpeas for the week before Joey arrived back home.  I did eventually go out to buy a dress but mostly I just felt tired and not into it.

Ended Sunday with the freshest salad, — Side Note: Joey was SO excited about eating vegetables, so I just assume the entire bachelor party was junk food and beer 😛 — a walk with our pup, spatchcocking a chicken and getting into bed to read.  Woke up to the first episode of Binge Mode: Harry Potter, so Monday isn’t all bad!

What did you do this weekend?

Weekend Things

When it’s Friday and you meet Trevor Story or it’s Saturday and you have a pre-Shakespeare Festival picnic with you mom and sister or it’s Sunday and you brew beer before deciding to go to City Park Jazz then nothing is bad ever ♥

We got invited to an “Exclusive Autograph Session” before the game on Friday and totally expected to meet a relief pitcher or maybe someone on the DL, so imagine our surprise when it turned out to be Trevor Story!  Guys, in person (and not on the field) he is HUGE!  I was gonna make a “you didn’t have to dress up just for us” joke because he was in a t-shirt with cutoff sleeves but then I got too nervous.

Afterwards (and before the game started), we grabbed dinner up on the rooftop patio at Whiskey Foxtrot Tango.  The service was kind of slow and my tuna bánh mì was WAY TOO spicy but it was a perfect night for some rooftop sitting and also I didn’t care because: Trevor Story.  He went on to hit a homerun, Rockies went on to win the game and we had the best seats behind home plate.  Just an overall perfect night, even if we didn’t catch any Cracker Jacks during the 7th Inning Stretch.

I’d been dying to try The White Whale Room for MONTHS and we finally made it there Saturday morning.  We were the only ones there (save for a friend of the barista’s, sitting at the bar) so that felt weird but the space is so funky-beautiful (that’s a term, right?), they serve drinks in Tiki mugs and that breakfast burrito is griddled and plated to straight perfection.

The rest of the day involved complaining about how hot it was errand running, in preparation for a picnic I was having that night and picking up beer supplies for some Sunday homebrewing.  Cheese + Provisions opened up in our neighborhood a few months ago and I had been looking for a good excuse to go drop some money on fancy cheese, so a picnic seemed like the perfect opportunity.  Spoiler: I loved the shop!!!  Also, we walked through this new bridge tunnel to get to the liquor store and I’m frightened that this is what we consider excitement.

The moment I look forward to all summer… SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL!  I know, I know but my nerdy English major heart just loves sitting outside in the Mary Rippon Theater with my two favorite people, listening to cryptic-Shakespearean language on a summer night.  Joey suggested we picnic before and when he heard the spread we had planned his response was “um, well I just meant something like sandwiches.”  It’s like he doesn’t even know us Dorseys at all.

My mom claimed The Comedy of Errors “wasn’t her favorite,” and I’ll admit it was a little overdone but I still liked it and ended up loving that they switched out the four main male characters for females.  Girl power!  Haunted Mackey Auditorium was looking extra eerie as we walked back to the car afterwards.  My heart is always so full after attending the fest with my family and this year was no exception.  Is it too soon to start looking forward to next year??

I dragged Joey on a run Sunday morning but then I made up for it with homemade Vietnamese Iced Coffee!  Turns out it’s totally easy to make yourself and it was a good way to use up some of the dark roast coffee I bought then decided I didn’t like on its own.  Sweetened condensed milk makes all things better, ya know?  We also jumped right into beer brewing and were done and cleaned up by noon?!  We’re never not doing it that way again.  Red ale comin at ya in 3-ish weeks.

As we were outside pulling weeds from our garden, I lamented that “I don’t want to do any responsible adult things today!”  Not into it at all.  I bucked up and eventually dragged myself to the grocery store/prepped lunch for the week, but then we ditched dinner at home and decided to hit up City Park Jazz.  It was the second to last week AND we already had all the (leftover) makings of a picnic so it seemed like perfect timing.  It was SO NICE to just spend an evening outside on a blanket, eating cheese, listening to live music and taking advantage of as much weekend time as possible before Monday.

In other words: PERFECT WEEKEND.
