Dempsey’s 3rd Birthday!

WHAT. A. WEEKEND. Our boy is three and I can hardly believe it, except that it feels like he got bigger, smarter and funnier overnight. I think this year will be a WILD ride but an amazing one to witness. I’m truly excited! We got to celebrate his actual birthday on Friday with a trip to the zoo and a family dinner and then we had the best weather for his party on Saturday. It was a candy-filled explosion of fun and I think he had the best time 🤍 Topped it all off with family breakfast and Killers of the Flower Moon. None of our chores got done but oh well 😊

Happy Birthday to our boy! We covered him in balloons when he woke up and I think he got a kick out of it! You never know what kind of weather you’re going to get in October in Colorado but we were hoping it would be warm enough for a zoo trip and we lucked out! It was chilly when we first got there but was HOT by the time we left. He insisted on wearing his Halloween costume 😂 Lori took them back to her house for the rest of the day so Joey and I could get some stuff done for the party and then we picked them back up around 5 and headed to pick up bbq for dinner in front of the tv, at the birthday boy’s request. Popped on The Super Mario Bros. Movie but between Lydia crawling all over, trying to make sure both kids were eating and trying to hold our own plates, I could not tell you anything about the movie 🤪 We also opened presents — more excited about his telescope and Yoto Player than his book and helmet 😂 — and after Lyds went to bed, we ate the no-churn Oreo ice cream we’d made earlier in the week. A perfect night with our boy! 🤍

Saturday started with a trip to the drive thru at Huckleberry Roasters for Joey and Lydi and Demps hung out with me while I made us all mock-Grand Slam McMuffins a la Molly’s Rise & Shine and you should’ve seen the fuss he made while eating it 🤣 He kept yelling “ew, ew, I tasted something bad!” but then kept trying to eat it! Afterward, we got to decorating for the party and it all came together fairly quick and easy. We went with a Willy Wonka theme since he’s so into the movie and I think he loved it!

The party started at 3, so we got Demps up and ready and got Lydi (who had had a busy afternoon of playing with balloons 😂) down and then all our guests started arriving. I totally forgot to take a picture of all the food once we had it set up but just know we had wayyyyy too many wings and fries. I DID get a picture of the most important part… the cookies Hannah made! Are those insanely good or what?? When she explained how she made that extra special Wonka Bar one just for Demps, my brain exploded. She’s so talented! It was so nice outside that we got to be in the backyard the whole time and it was a really fun time for all. Grandma Lori set up her bouncy castle and ball pit and I think all the kids (even Lydi once she was back up from her nap!) went in to play and Dempsey got soooo many good gifts from everyone. I think I am equally excited to play with it all! My mom made a purple velvet cake for him 💜 and I decked it out with candy decorations and then he literally lit his own candle with a match… can’t say I was pleased to see he knows how to do that. Lydi and Landon got to play with the piggy bank toy Grandma Sheila got for her and it’s crazy how close in size those two babies are 😂 Totally forgot to get pictures with the first few guests to leave but then we forced Dempsey to take one with everyone else in various states of cooperation. Aunt Bean and Uncle Wayne were the last to leave so they got to come try out Dempsey’s telescope with us 🤍 Got the kids to bed at a normal(ish) time and got to relax for a bit by ourselves afterward. Phew!

Everyone had a bit of a rough night — eating candy all day will do that to ya! — but we were up and at em again the next morning because we had a family breakfast to attend. Dempsey was very interested in Todd and Cathy’s chickens and kept needing to go outside to see them and Lydi was having a fun time with everyone inside 🤍 Unfortunately, the girl who is allergic to everything is also allergic to dogs so she broke out into some hives shortly before we left but she was all better by the time we got over to Grandma’s to drop them off so Joey and I could go see Killers of the Flower Moon. I brought a bottle of water into my 3.5 hour movie like a true psycho but then we made it through the whole thing without a bathroom break. We thought it was really good! I was definitely aware of the run time but it’s such an interesting (and sad) story and Leo, De Niro and Lily Gladstone are so so good. I was really blown away by all of their performances. Saw some similarities to Goodfellas actually! Back at home we ate wings for dinner and busted out some of Dempsey’s new toys. Got the kids to bed and watched BB before getting into bed ourselves. I’m looking forward to a normal schedule for the week but I’m also so sad all of Dempsey’s birthday week festivities are over. I think he is too!

Happy Monday, everyone!
