Weekend Things: Cabo, Olympics & the Super Bowl

I’m just now realizing much has happened since I last wrote! We took a trip to the ER after Dempsey tripped and hit his head on the frame of our bed, we vacationed in Cabo, we watched the Olympic Opening Ceremony and the first few days of the games and we topped it all off with Benito Bowl! More on that later, but why is football just so so so boring??

I won’t get into Dempsey’s injury or our vacation too much (but I did post about both on Instagram, if you’re interested), but he’s all glued back together and healing well and we had a really great time hanging out with Grandpa Steve and Lorna in Cabo. Their house is beautiful, the weather was perfect and the kids had a blast in the hot tube and pool!

Back at home, we had a pretty normal Friday and ended it with the Opening Ceremony and rib dinner. I’ve decided ribs are too good to only eat on the 4th of July 😉 We let the kids stay up a little bit later to watch the beginning of the ceremony and they proceeded to yell and play and just make so much noise the entire time 😅 I loved all the dancing and so did Lydia because she put on her ballet shoes and danced along and Dempsey laughed SO hard at the big head composers 😂 After they went to bed, we finished the broadcast in peace. Let the games begin!

The kids slept in on Saturday, so I made waffle batter and then, once they were up, we all ate breakfast and hung out until Lydia’s swim lesson. They switched her to a new coach (by far my least favorite thing about the place we go is the constant switching of coaches) and… it did not go well. Took me ten minutes to get her into the pool and then she spent the remaining ten minutes of her lesson crying for me. Pray for us next week! Afterward, my mom, sis and I went to the orchid showcase at the Botanic Gardens. It was a really nice time and all the orchids were so beautiful 😍 We had lunch after and prices for a sandwich aside, I loved that too! Back at home, I made us some ragu in the Instant Pot and we got the kids to bed early before watching some Olympic coverage. Speaking of Olympics, I finished The Favorites, about a pair of Olympic ice dancers, that night and wow did I love that book! It’s ever-so-slightly overdramatic but I kind of liked that about it. If you, like me, loved I, Tonya, then this one’s for you!

I have hardly any pictures but probably too many words for Sunday. The kids slept in again so that Joey and I were both able to work out before they woke up and then we had breakfast and just hung out at home (LOL at Dempsey drawing Krumm from Aaahh!!! Real Monsters after I had showed him a picture the night before) . I got salads assembled and Dempsey helped me make Chex Mix for the Super Bowl party later. We headed over shortly after 3 PM and the kids went straight to playing 😀 The game felt so long and so boring to me but I really really enjoyed Bad Bunny’s halftime show! On a purely performance level, the production was amazing. And what a beautiful tribute to Puerto Rican and Latin culture. I, too, would have Lady Gaga join me for my halftime show and though I didn’t expect it, the salsa version of “Die with a Smile” was great. Truly though, I’m such a sucker for a big dance number, so this show was just so fun to watch. We got home so late — the kids were wiped and weepy and Dempsey had a stomachache, which was such a shock following his refusal to eat any real food at the party and making a dinner out of cookies, M&Ms, rice crispy treats and Sprite 😒 Finally got them to bed shortly after 10 PM then went straight to bed ourselves.

I hope you all had a nice weekend and are ready to bribe your 5 year old into signing 14 Valentine’s cards this week. Or is that just me? 😅
