Weekend Things

Whoa, it must have been a good and busy weekend because I was so out of it when I woke up this morning and I really have to think hard to remember everything that’s happened in the past two and a half days!  But I do remember Mason in a fedora, talking about (among other things) Big Brother with Hannah and Josh, sitting in the shade for a moment post-Farmers’ Market, tidying up the garden, reading in the hammock, two major thunderstorms, wings and a movie with my mama and sister ♥, French toast, a birthday party and maybe laying on our new deck.

Friday night, we met Hannah, Josh and Mason at Acreage.  The hour+ wait was not ideal, but gosh, what a pretty spot!  Plus I thought the food was very good.  I somehow failed to get a picture of Mason (HOW??), but he entertained us during the wait by flirting with any lady who walked by, playing peek-a-boo behind a tree and get this… spelling out the letters on a sign that said “Warning!”  Um, I don’t think I knew how to spell my name, let alone, the entire alphabet at 19 months!

Saturday morning, I woke up to see Andi in bed with us and even though most the time he’s trying to bite me, he’s super cuddly in the morning and it’s my favorite!  We got up and headed straight to the Farmer’s Market where I found iced coffee, peaches, a loaf of Challah and, finally, SHISHITOS!  We sat on the bench near the Union Station fountains afterward to rearrange our basket, but ended up hanging there for a minute and afterward, Joey was like “wow, it was really nice to sit there with you!” and I’m glad he pointed it out, because, it really was.  He hit deck duty right after we got home, so I did some quick garden clean-up and hung all our garlic bulbs up to cure (!!!) before reading, lunching and heading to the grocery.

We had plans to grab dinner and a movie with my sister and Wayne, but Wayne was not feeling well, so my mom subbed in!  It started POURING as we were driving over to Fire on the Mountain and it was really insane.  We’re talking sheets of rain, actual flash flooding, hail and a poor Amazon delivery man still doing his job through it all.  We tried to wait it out in the car but eventually made a run for it.  I traded my sister for a raspberry habenero wing and I think it was my favorite sauce flavor.

Afterward, we went to the Alamo to see The Lion King and… I didn’t love it.  There are some truly beautiful shots (that opening image of Pride Rock, the stampede, Simba seeing Mufasa in the sky), but in an attempt to realistically depict lions, you lose the expressiveness and theatricality of the original, so it all just feels sort of flat.  Nala is pleading with Simba to return home and the lion’s face is just deadpan, you know?  Still, those songs are great, Billy Eichner as Timon is surprisingly good and the story is as emotionally powerful as ever.  Watching Mufasa die was somehow MORE devastating as an adult?!

We put that loaf of Challah to use by making French toast on Sunday morning and even though I had the forethought to put a can of coconut cream in the fridge to make coconut whipped cream to go with, I somehow forgot.  Ugh!  Joey went back out to work on the deck so I made our salads and read for a bit and then we both cleaned ourselves up and headed to Peyton’s 2nd birthday party.  I got to see little Ellie too!  Also, just look at the progress Joey made!  I’m maybe trying to figure out how to hide our neighbors graffiti-ed and dirty-guttered garage from my sight but also dreaming of new deck furniture to lounge on.

We finished out the weekend by watching the original Toby McGuire Spider-Man (I was inspired after seeing Spider-Man: Far From Home last week) and don’t get me wrong, Toby was fully 10 years too old to play Spider-Man, but I ride for the original okay?  I’m not saying Tom Holland isn’t better, I’m just saying show some respect for the OG.  Afterward, Big Brother and bed.  How was your weekend?

The First Weekend of Spring

It’s officially spring and these are some things that made my heart full this weekend: getting wings and fries for dinner with my mom, sister and Joey, letting my sister sip my gose, then her LOVING it (my beer girl heart lit right up!), watching a movie on the couch, eating a carrot cake waffle, running outside and feeling good and strong all the way through, baking granola and having that sweet smell fill the house, spending Saturday night with our best friends and being totally smitten and mesmerized by the cutest baby to ever exist, walking to get coffee and toast on Sunday morning, sipping a strawberry-chamomile kombucha, making dinner together, ending Sunday with a good movie.

Friday night, we went to Fire on the Mountain and I decided Jamaican Jerk tastes like the ramen seasoning packet (in a good way) and blue cheese > ranch for wings and celery dipping.  We watched Creed afterwards and while I loved Michael B. Jordan, narratively, it felt a little disjointed.  Seemed like he was already a boxer at the beginning but then he hadn’t been trained and then he got trained but then got challenged to a fight and there was ANOTHER training sequence.  What?!  Am I nitpicking? 🙂

Saturday, we had pizza and baby snuggles for dinner at Hannah and Josh’s, then Mason showed us how to do tummy time and instead of impressing us with his rolling over skills, he burped then spit up and we all laughed really hard.  Joey got it on video and I’ve watched it like 50 times because it’s somehow still the cutest thing ever!  We went out for ice cream afterwards and Hannah and I were not about the girl behind the counter telling people Purple Cow is Little Man‘s best flavor because it is most definitely Space Junkie.

Sunday night, we made Lentil-Tahini Burgers with Cabbage Slaw and Snap Peas with Feta and it all tasted like spring!  In other words, there were bright snappy flavors and fresh herbs.  We also watched Between Us and we really liked the way it was filmed but it was also sort of heartbreaking to watch the two main characters emotionally destroy each other.  In the end, we really enjoyed it, but mainly, there was a scene towards the beginning where the couple decide to get married, then dance around the house yelling “husband and wife!” and Joey and I maybe did that afterwards.

How was your weekend?
