A list of things consumed by my head, heart, eyes, ears and stomach lately.

Making a Murderer

I feel like I probably shouldn’t even bother mentioning this one.  If you haven’t already watched it for yourself, you’ve probably heard about it from everyone and their mom already.  I’m just chiming in to say that it is as interesting, infuriating, thought-provoking and engrossing as everyone (and their mom) says.  I’ve been thinking about it a lot since we finished it Saturday night.

The Sleepwalker’s Guide to Dancing

How could I forget to mention our November book club read?!  It was pretty long but I was so sucked in from the get go.  It kind of lost me towards the end — too many moving parts — but I really really loved the other 80%.  I love when authors so effortlessly voice their main characters and are able to create dialogue that’s current and realistic without being cheesy or predictable.  A rare talent!

Broccoli Quinoa Salad with Buttermilk Dressing

When you’re deep in the depths of winter eating (hi, sugar, carbs and comfort food!), it’s like a breath of fresh air to eat something light, bright and bursting with fresh herb flavor.  This salad kept tasting better and better every time I pulled it out of the fridge.  Sara Dickerman never steers me wrong.

Carol

Okay, hate me all you want, but I don’t get Cate Blanchett.  Sure, she’s an accomplished and talented actress who transcends movie roles and actually becomes the character, but I also feel like it’s the same character every time and I don’t happen to enjoy that character.  This movie’s getting a bunch of award show buzz but Joey and I agreed that it was incredibly slow and not very well developed.

Roasted Onion, Squash & Fig Salad with Maple Mustard Balsamic Dressing

I put this salad on our menu and Joey whipped it up for me Sunday night.  Truth: The way to my heart is to hand me a big salad.  That’s all it takes.  I was elated!  The combo of butternut squash, figs, goat cheese and the most delicious dressing that ever was is all one needs in life, ammiright?

The Danish Girl

I’d like to take this moment to say I CALLED IT.  The whole time I watched Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything I kept thinking “He’s kind of got some feminine features, no?”  Is that offensive?  Apparently, I’m not the only one who thought so, since he plays a transgender woman in The Danish Girl.  Looks aside, Joey and I both really liked this one!  It’s so emotional and touching in the best way possible.  The way the two main characters loved each other unconditionally was so beautiful.

The Hateful Eight

We saw this in 70mm on Wednesday.  There were booklets, an overture and an intermission.  The theater was pretty full, especially considering it was a Wednesday night and the rest of the movie theater seemed dead, and it was kind of exciting!  Which, I think, is the feel Tarantino was trying to give, but here’s the thing.  The movie kind of draaaaaagged and personally, I just didn’t find it that interesting or entertaining or worth watching again.  Sorry!

Mission Bell

Okay, I’m like four years behind but…um why didn’t I own this Amos Lee album till now?  I’ve literally never ever heard a bad live performance by this man.  In other words, I’m totally on board and solemnly vow to not to miss his next Red Rocks concert, whenever that ends up being 🙂

The Paying Guests

At the risk of making it sound like all I do is eat and watch TV (which is totally true), I’ll mention that I’m also about 100 pages away from finishing this book.  I find WWII timeframe stuff to be so interesting, so I’m loving that aspect of the book and the plot is definitely unique.  I’m anxious to see how everything gets wrapped up!

Wishing you all a Happy Friday and a relaxing weekend.  We’ve got snow to start ours, here in Colorado!

What I’m Loving Lately: February Edition

Confession: Even though it is part of the season that shall not be named, I kind of love February.  It’s a shorty month packed full of holidays, award shows and Colorado’s signature bi-polar weather.  Case in point, 75 degrees last Tuesday, dumped snow on Saturday.  Or another case in point, 60 degrees on Monday, snow on Wednesday, back to 60 degrees today.  It makes no sense, but it also means the best of both worlds — cozy snow days, sunny spring-like days.  I’ll take it!

Other things I’m loving this month?

On the food front: dried figs, Asian pears (and I don’t even like pears!) and all the egg things.  Egg sandwiches, salads with eggs, scrambled eggs with melty goat cheese.  Yes, yes, yes to all of that.  Also, I just realized the key to perfectly scrambled eggs is to pull them off the heat when they’re still glossy.  How did I never know that?

Tea.  When we started the cleanse, I decided to take a break from coffee (don’t worry, it’s back in my life now) and stick to black tea, which I’ve continued to drink (almost) every morning.  Plus I’ve been keeping my office stocked with Raspberry Zinger so I drink about a billion cups of that a day.

Empty weekends.  Did I mention that towards the end of wedding planning, Joey and I were so longing for weekends where we had nothing to do?  We couldn’t even remember what we did on the weekends before they were filled with cake tastings, seating charts and ceremony writing.  Turns out what we did was watch a lot of TV and go to a lot of movies, which is all we’ve been doing lately.  Sometimes it’s fun to be a couch zombie without feeling like there are more important things to be doing.

Best movie theater ever, right there ^^^.

Friday Night Lights.  We were thisclose to watching The Wire when I decided to be honest with myself and admit that I wanted to watch FNL.  Joey’s already watched the whole series but insisted he didn’t mind really wanted to watch it again, so here we are.  We’re really bonding over our mutual infatuation with Tim Riggins.

Valentine’s Day preparations.  It’s no secret that I love the heck out of Valentine’s Day.  I’m such a sucker for that lovey dovey stuff.  Yeah, one of those people.
