Best Moments of the Olympics

I know, I know, the Olympics ended days ago, or as far as my mom’s concerned, the Olympics ended after Michael Phelps’s last event.  But.  I went on vacation so I’m a little behind.  And also, I wasn’t ready to come to terms with the fact that the event I’ve been waiting four years for is… over.  I have a feeling a little reminiscing will cheer me right up.

Here were the best moments of the Olympic games.  In my opinion at least.

10. Mr. Bean at the Opening Ceremony.

Maybe it was the sangria I was drinking, but I was hysterical during the scene when he was “playing” Chariot of Fire with one hand, and checking his iPhone with the other.

9. Team USA winning the Women’s Team Final in gymnastics.

Guys, we rocked it.  And really what made this moment so amazing, was getting to see Jordyn Wieber get her gold after seeing how crushed she was to not make it to the all-around final.  But I still missed Shawn Johnson.

8. Kirani James and Oscar Pistorius exchange bibs.

Do I really need to explain?  Anyone who saw can understand how touching this moment was.

7. Danell Leyva wins bronze in the Men’s All-Around Gymnastics Final.

All these athletes are too hard on themselves, if you ask me.  They should all be proud that they even made it to the Olympics.  After seeing so many people disappointed for not winning gold, it was really nice to see someone who was happy just to medal.  That relationship he has with his dad seems super weird, though.

6. Missy Franklin domination.

She’s from my home state and she did us Coloradans proud.  And not just during the “Call Me Maybe” video.

5. Usain Bolt is still the fastest man in that world.

It would be cooler if Usain was from the US.  And if he was less cocky, but I’ll still admit it’s pretty amazing to watch him compete.

4. Sam Mikulak hugging Yang Hak-Seon.

Sam came in 5th during the vault final, but I give him the gold for his positivity and sportsmanship.  His congratulatory hug to the Korean gold medalist was plain awesome.  And sorry guys, apparently no one else liked this moment enough to snap a picture of it.

3. The Spice Girls at the Closing Ceremony.

Because I was a girl who grew up in the 90’s.  And that should be all the explanation you need.

2. Kerri Walsh and Misty May Threepeat.

I was so happy for them when they won, and mostly because they were so happy for themselves when they won.  Did you see Misty’s celebration dance??  These two women are the true definition of partnership and every interview they did together was so precious.

1. Michael Phelps

Oh, is that not a specific moment?

Here’s the thing.  I love Michael Phelps.  He’s been America’s Olympic poster child since 2004.  We’ve watched him do our country proud in 4 separate Olympic games.  We’ve counted on him to astound us, race after race.  We’ve seen him smile, cheer, celebrate and occasionally look disappointed.  I felt like we knew him and seriously, the Olympics won’t be the same without him.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go figure out how I can afford ticket to Rio in 2016.

Ten Things I Haven’t Told You

1. I have a new blog?…

Long story short, I needed a fresh start.  Or something.

2. Joey and I drove up to Brainard Lake last weekend for an amazing hike.

And yes I did just say last weekend.  Blog much, Lauren?

It was basically just a walk in the mountains which is totally my kind of hike.  And the scenery wasn’t half bad.

The whole rain, hail and dodging giant puddles thing was even kind of fun.

We knew those emergency ponchos would come in handy at some point in our lives.

3. Joey is doing that whole marathon thing again.

Nothing makes you feel lazier than waking up two hours after someone has gone out to run 12 miles.  Except maybe sitting on the couch for the rest of the day while that same person who just ran 12 miles is out doing yard work.

4. This.

My mom bought herself a new dog for her birthday.  He’s a 1 year old longhaired dachshund mix who’s still a little skittish.  And who makes Huni look much more like a goofy overweight dachshund.

But I still love that goofy girl.

5. I planned my mom a little birthday dinner surprise.

Which is much less surprising when you have to call her and tell her she has to stop planning her own birthday dinner.  And even less surprising when she tells you what she wants you to make and comes home 20 minutes before you expect her to.

I wonder where I get my inability to not be in control in the kitchen from??

6. I kinda love Colorado.

Even at 5:30 AM when I just went on a run that I’m pretty sure I was not awake during.

7. My mom and I saw 12th Night at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival last Sunday.

My favorite part was the grasshopper that fell on my mom’s head then landed on her shirt right in the middle of the play, but the drunken supporting characters were a close second.

I absolutely adore seeing these plays every summer.  Call me a nerd.  Or call me an English major.

8. Imperfect peaches are pretty perfect.

These were on sale on the Farmers’ Market because they have a bruise of two.  One farmer’s trash is another Lauren’s treasure.  That’s the saying, right?

9. If these are the kinds of things you can expect from Maui, consider me officially moving.

We’ll fondly refer to this as “the night we ate an entire pineapple.”  Which is second, of course, to “the night we ate an entire King Cake.”

 10. The Olympics have officially started.

The Opening Ceremony couldn’t have been longer.

Mr. Bean couldn’t have been funnier.

Michael Phelps’s back couldn’t be any bigger.

And I couldn’t be happier.

I love the Olympics!

And now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go sit in front of the TV and watch some sport I’ve probably never cared about before like it’s my favorite thing in the entire world.
