A list of things consumed by my head, heart, eyes, ears and stomach lately.

It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover

This was our August book club read and I honestly thought it was some beach read drivel and okay, parts of it definitely were, but in the end it was a really eye-opening and thought-provoking take on domestic abuse.  I am VERY interested to see what the other ladies in my group thought of it.

Store Bought Booch

Between vacation and general summer busy-ness, I’ve had a few batches of kombucha that I’ve had to toss and re-brew.  This is totally fine and one of the best things about making your own booch is that your SCOBY is happy-as-a-clam just living in that fermented liquid for an extra week or two.  AKA zero guilt for neglecting your brew for a bit.  Also, not having a fresh batch in the fridge means getting a chance to see what’s on the shelf.  This seasonal flavor roped me right in AND inspired me to make a cherry-lime flavor of my own!

The Incredible Jessica James

Joey downloaded this for us to watch on the flight to Portland and even though we only made it through half and then it took something like three tries to finally finish watching it, I really enjoyed it.  I didn’t LOVE it and felt like it maybe hadn’t found that perfect balance between funny moments and moments with more emotional heft but the main character was a pure delight.  May we all have as much self-confidence as Jessica James!

Spaghetti with Tomato & Walnut Pesto

Remember when Joey made this for me last summer?  He did it again!  I think it was even better this time around!  The pesto has tomatoes and walnuts obviously, but also lemon zest, anchovies and garlic and even though they’re blitzed together, you can taste every one of those ingredients shining through.  He dished me up a huge bowl and I scarfed the entire thing down in a very ladylike way.

Young the Giant at Red Rocks

Joywave opened (pass), Cold War Kids followed (meh) and by the time YTG came on I was so over hearing other bands and the wind and rain coming down on us, but then Sameer was dancing and singing and the band was so into it and I was jumping all over and all was right in the world.  What a show and what a bright note to leave Red Rocks Concert Season 2017 on.

The Big Sick

I’d been wanting to see this film all summer, so when we found ourselves without any Friday night plans, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.  I laughed A LOT during this movie!  Kumail Nanjiani is a comedic gem and support from Aidy Bryant and Bo Burnham didn’t hurt.  Again though, I didn’t LOVE it and couldn’t really place my finger on why.  It had a ton of heart and beautifully depicted just how difficult it is for second generation Americans to figure out their own beliefs in contrast to their parents’ beliefs but I just kept thinking that if I hadn’t known it was a true story, I would have found the plot very strange.

The Eclipse!

I think of myself as a pretty on-top-of-it type of person, but I guess I didn’t fully realize how big of a deal this eclipse was.  Cut to Joey and I not buying eclipse glasses when we were JUST IN OREGON.  What were we even doing??  Luckily, we work for a construction company so we had welding shields and smoke glasses and made due.  On the one hand, the eclipse was kind of anti-climactic but on the other hand, how cool is it that we got to see it?  And even cooler were all those crescent-shaped shadows on the ground!!  Mark my words, I’ll be ready for 2024!

This 9-Minute Workout

Or did this workout consume me?  Our 15K training plan said we should “stretch and strengthen” on Monday so I found this “easy little workout plan” for us and 2 minutes in, we realized it was NOT going to be easy.  Going to simultaneously feel dread and determination every Monday for the next five weeks.

Affogato

A couple of months ago, Joey and I finally made it to Dio Mio and were blown away by that hand-made pasta and sun-drenched community table so when I realized they had affogato on their dessert menu and I could kill two birds with one stone by going back, we jumped at the chance.  Verdict: We still loved it!  It’s not what I’d call cheap, especially for an order at the counter place, but the drinks were still delicious, the pasta was still cheesy and plentiful and I think I could drink that bagna cauda sauce underneath the broccoli rabe.  As for the affogato… tasted like vanilla ice cream and espresso.  Can you imagine?  Also, caffeine at 7 PM was a terrible terrible decision.

The Light of Paris by Eleanor Brown

I borrowed this from my mom, who borrowed it from client, who had it signed by the author!  It was a sweet little story that included scenes from the most beautiful city I’ve ever visited and, though I’m usually more into stories from the past than the present — nothing pulls you out of a book quicker than mention of Starbucks or Siri — this one included both and I actually liked both.  No Starbucks or iPhone talk, thankfully!  Definitely an enjoyable read.

In other news, it’s cabin weekend and there’s going to be tacos and peach galette, so I’ll be off in my happy place.  Wishing you the same (tacos and galette included)!

Weekend Things

If you want to start your weekend off with a bang, make a spontaneous decision to leave work early and hit that new restaurant you’ve been wanting to try, then watch a Rockies win!

We’d been wanting to try out Señor Bear since it opened a couple of months ago and they just so happened to be launching their happy hour service on Friday so we kind of HAD to go, right?  We sat out on the patio because: still summer!  Then sipped our drinks — I got a frozen cranberry margarita and it was STRONG — and basically ordered one everything on the menu.  Can you even believe how cute that little Gordo Crunch is?!  Tasty too!

Okay, not to brag, but I’m 15-2 on Rockies games this season.  Just sayin!  We won on Friday and I was like “sweep, sweep, sweep!” but then we lost on Saturday and Sunday and I’m taking this as a sign that I really am the key to the Rockies winning 🙂

If you want to ensure that you don’t get to sleep in on a Saturday, go to Yoga on the Rocks but then make up for it by drinking coffee and getting a manicure with your sister afterwards.

img_1656img_1627

Doing yoga in the sunshine at Red Rocks is a truly beautiful experience but holy moly, is that 5:30 AM wake up call rough!  I wrangled my sister into going with me and she later told her manicurist “my sister made me go to Yoga on the Rocks this morning,” so I think she really enjoyed it 😛  Afterwards, we walked to coffee then walked to get breakfast burritos then got our nails done.  Just going to say, it was definitely NOT the best manicure I’ve ever had…

Garden Season 2017 is winding down — except for the legit pumpkin patch and all the butternut squash we have in our yard… — so we pulled a bunch of carrots and decided we maybe let them grow a little too long because that red one was HUGE!  But it was majorly beautiful too.  I think we went to the grocery store and I made  pizza dough later?  I woke up at 5:30 AM and I don’t think my brain was working properly.

If your Summer Bucket List includes going to the drive-in, but this is the last weekend you could possibly go before their season is over and they’re playing The Nutty Job 2 (NO), then just make your own drive-in experience in the backyard.

img_1637

In the words of Joey, “we’re awesome and we should do this more often!”  Strongly agree!  We rented Passengers because we felt we should watch a action-packed blockbuster to get the full drive-in experience, but I just want to tell you that this movie wasn’t very good.  There was dramatic music and people speaking in passionate tones — all signs that something serious was happening — but I was laughing?  I don’t think that’s what the movie creators were trying for.  This just in: Chris Pratt is funny and all, but he might not actually be a good actor.  And even though J. Law has won/been nominated for serious acting awards, she might not be either.

If you want to make up for an early Saturday morning, do NOT go for an early morning run on Sunday.

FAIL!  Did I mention Joey and I are running a 15K at the beginning of October?  At first, I thought “I might as well just run a half marathon!” but then I realized a 15K (9.3 miles) is almost FOUR MILES SHORTER than a half, and that’s pretty significant.  We’re doing a quick little 7 week training program to get ready so we ran 5 miles on Sunday morning and even though I was totally out of energy during that last .25 miles, we did it and it feels really good to be on a structured program again.

img_1660

Afterwards, we chilled out for a bit then I showered and got ready for afternoon plans and Joey made us lunch burritos for the week!  I LOVE when he does that.  Salads-in-a-jar are wonderful but sometimes you need a quick break and the best way to do it is with double cheese burritos, right?  Also want to let you know that Joey’s burrito folding technique is top notch.

img_1641img_1661img_1665

Said “afternoon plans” involved lunch and Frozen Live with my mom, sister and niece.  Lady date!  We had lunch at BriDer — they totally forgot my sister’s order and I was like “guys, you’re embarrassing us both in front of our new diners!” — then joined all the little girls in blue dresses and blonde wigs at The Buell for the show.  I just need a minute to complain about the mom next to us who chose the middle of “Let It Go” to leave the theater, when the intermission was literally 30 seconds later.  WHY?!  Also, in my professional honest opinion, two-and-a-half hours is too long for a childrens’ show but my niece was happy and an afternoon spent with your family at The Buell is never bad.

P.S. LOL at the very educational song about Hygge that they added to the show!

Remember last summer when we made these fish foil packs and I burnt the living hell out of the potatoes and the Spanish Chorizo we spent $7 and multiple grocery stores trips on?  Or did that not traumatize you as much as it did me?  Well we re-made that meal and I’m happy to report we fully redeemed ourselves.  Turns out they even have “Chorizo Espanol” right at the deli of our regular grocery store and I could get the exact amount we needed.  Soft potatoes with crispy edges, salty Chorizo, that compound butter and perfectly flaky fish?  Yes please!

And if you want to know my opinion on last night’s episode of Game of Thrones, get ready for an earful!  I just want you to know, I called it to Joey last week so in addition to being the Rockies whisperer, I’m also the GoT plot whisperer.  Oh and Happy Eclipse Day!
