Mother’s Day Weekend 2023

Hello and Happy Mother’s Day recovery to those of us with toddlers and babies, both of whom were rocking low grade fevers this weekend ๐Ÿ˜ฑ I think we mostly survived, but there is definitely lots of laundry that didn’t get folded and dishes that didn’t get washed and sleep that was more interrupted than usual. But still, I’m so happy to celebrate my very favorite gig of being a mom to these two crazy kids and we have had THREE babies born to close friends and family as of today. Happy Mother’s Day indeed!

Behold Dempsey’s hair on Friday morning ๐Ÿ˜ He was a bit worn down at Grandma’s but by the time I picked him up, he seemed mostly okay. Joey was putting Lyds down for a late nap, so I took Demps to pick up wings at Fire on the Mountain with me and it was actually kind of nice going someplace with him, just the two of us. We saw a guy drop his to-go order of wings outside his car, so Dempsey wanted to tell Dad all about it when we got back. He’s also the king of getting every single bit of chicken off the drumstick ๐Ÿ˜‚

Two babies cuddling in bed but one was not ready for photos ๐Ÿ˜‚ Made us French toast for breakfast but I can tell Dempsey is still a little off because his appetite is low. Afterward, we made our way to Sloan’s Lake for the annual CF Walk. It was a little cloudy and cool but otherwise nice. There was a drumline at the start and Dempsey was SO mesmerized by it. Perhaps that’s why he was drumming all over stuff this morning ๐Ÿค”

After his nap, Dempsey supervised Dad cleaning the floors and watched Monster’s Inc. (one of his current favorites!) and then Joey headed out for a little delayed bachelor/last hurrah before becoming a dad celebration for Adam. I got the kids fed and in bed and kerplunked myself on the couch. Let the fact that I can’t even remember if either of them went down easy or not go to show that either my brain doesn’t work right any more or those details are so fleeting that they don’t even matter ๐Ÿ˜‹ Joey got home at 10:45ish and gave me a recap of the night but I was so tired, so he had to keep it brief.

A Mother’s Day whirlwind ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคช Lyds was up at 5:45 AM! She’s been a habitual early riser but the 5 o’clock hour ain’t it, little girl. Luckily she went back to sleep in Joey’s arms and then I woke up and it was already 7! Went into Dempsey’s room and asked if he wanted to come cuddle in Mom and Dad’s bed and he told me no ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Got the sweetest homemade gift, flowers and cards from my babies and their dad and then just complete chaos as I tried to shower while Joey got the house ready for visitors and then both of us trying not to lose our cool when Dempsey chucked a bottle of milk I had just pumped into the bathroom and spilled the entire thing ๐Ÿคฌ And during all of this, Lydia was absolutely losing her mind, shrieking. It was a cry I’ve never heard her do before and it was the saddest. Put her down for a nap just as everyone was showing up for breakfast. Amid all the choas, a delicious breakfast, quite the collection of flowers for all the moms, some baby talk and snuggles with my girl. Also Dempsey asking Siri to tell knock knock jokes and laughing hysterically even though I know there’s no way he got any of those ๐Ÿ˜‚ Aside from Lyds not feeling well, I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Tried to rally in the second part of the day to get some adulting done but we were tired! Got salads made, laundry at least washed, two children napped and dinner on the table, so I’m calling it a success. Both of them took longer than usual to go down for bed and then Joey and I watched the election episode of Succession and I only dozed off a few times ๐Ÿ˜‚ Hoping we all feel better and more rested this week!

Weekend Things

Hello and how was everyoneโ€™s first week of May? I visited the botanic gardens, started Beef, tackled Wednesday mid-day nap time with two kids by myself, watched Dempsey crush an ice cream sundae at Los Arcos and um, well, cried a lot. Just one of those weeks, you know? But we had a good weekend and Iโ€™m excited to show you.

Friday Flex Day means a mid-day mani. Feel like 90% of my nails were broken but maybe this clean up is just what they need! My blood pressure from that drive home in Friday traffic though ๐Ÿ˜ฑ It was also Loriโ€™s 60th birthday! She took the kids to the zoo to celebrate, then the adults went downtown for dinner at Elwayโ€™s. I promptly spilled my $21 cocktail on Joeyโ€™s grandpa but he was a good sport about it. The kids were with Aunt Bean and Uncle Wayne and I think they all had the best time ๐Ÿค And in case youโ€™re looking for an update on ditching the swaddle, after three bad nights, we absolutely bailed. Trying the one arm approach mostly for now. Found her sideways in the bassinet on Saturday morning ๐Ÿ˜‚

Aunt Bean and Uncle Wayne mustโ€™ve worn the kids out because they both slept in! Finally got around to eating breakfast at 9, which is basically unheard of in this household. Joey and Dempsey spent the rest of the morning at Home Depot while I hung with my girl. How cute is his planter?! Both kids got baths and naps in the afternoon and then we loaded into the car and headed to Lafayette to pick up pizza at Ghost Box and bring it over to Hannah and Josh’s. Lydia was losing it in the car so I fed her as soon as we got there and then we dug into our pizza. We tried a Detroit-style and a New York-style and both were really good! Then the boys proceeded to run around and scream for two hours. It’s all fun and games with the hockey sticks until your son is straight whacking the other two kids with them ๐Ÿ˜ฒ It was nice to catch up with our friends while the boys entertained themselves though! We got home late so we pretty much all went to bed as soon as we got back ๐Ÿ˜‚

A super Sunday ๐Ÿฅฐ Woke up and had breakfast at home. I made a praline simple syrup to mimic the latte I had in New Orleans and it was super good in my coffee! After breakfast, Demps and I left Joey and Lydia to go to the garden store and buy seeds and plants for the veggie garden. He wanted to touch every glass garden decoration but was otherwise a good helper. He picked out some tomato plants and an eggplant then started “planting” them when we got home. Afterward, we loaded up the kids in the stroller and headed to the park. I ran around the lake while Dempsey and Lydia BOTH swang (her first time in there and she LOVED IT) then we all walked back home for lunch and naps. While the kids were down, I made salads and Joey worked in the garden, then once Dempsey was up we got the plants and seeds in. Joey got it all fixed up nice and neat in there and after two summers of being pregnant and one summer as a new parent, I’m finally ready to give the garden some attention. Can’t wait to see how it goes!

I super quick assembled dinner while Lyds was down for her last nap so all we had to do was pop it in the oven later on. Joey had a lapful of kids watching Beauty and the Beast and it was the cutest ๐Ÿค Dinner turned out really good and Dempsey had seconds and thirds even. Nothing makes me happier than that! After both kids were in bed, we finally watched Thursday’s episode of Top Chef. I always love the Restaurant Wars episode! Our lady had a rough night and I hope it’s just teething and it passes soon because she was SO SAD and so were we. Happy Monday!
